June is National Hurricane Preparedness Month

Hurricane season is officially from June 1st to the end of November. As the December 11th floods showed us, the best thing we can do for ourselves and our families is to have a plan and be prepared for a disaster.

Hurricane Iwa in 1982 and Hurricane Iniki in 1992 were not that long ago. So, some of us still remember being without electricity for almost two weeks after Iwa. The worst part of that for many was that there was no water either. Neither of these hurricanes were direct hits for Oahu. Think what it would have been like if it had been a direct hit!

Now is the time to become informed and prepared! Come to an informational meeting on Saturday, August 1st 9AM behind the Haleiwa Gym in Cottage 2. This workshop is being hosted by the North Shore Chamber of Commerce and the Waialua Community Association. The state Civil Defense will be the workshop presenter. For more information on the workshop or to become a shelter volunteer, call the Chamber at 637-4558. To volunteer as a committee member, call Jay Oku, Chair, at 393-0707.

For more information on the North Shore Chamber of Commerce, go to the website at GoNorthShore.org or call 637-4558.
